Company Class with Laura Schlatter

Laura Schlatter began her dance training at the age of five in her hometown of Leo, IN. Under the directorship of Karen Gibbons-Brown, Laura studied dance professionally through the academy and conservatory programs of Fort Wayne Ballet. Furthering her professional training with Beth McLeish of Project Ballet (formerly New American Youth Ballet), Laura performed original works by Melinda Howe of Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and choreographer Jimmy Orrante. Throughout her career Laura has performed principal roles such as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Dewdrop in The Nutcracker, Swanhilda in Copéllia, as well as soloist and supporting roles in Giselle, Don Quixoté, Swan Lake, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and La Sylphide. Laura was a featured soloist in the Joffrey Ballet’s Birthday Variations choreographed by the late Gerald Arpino. She had the privilege of working with former Joffrey Ballet dancer Kim Sagami in preparation for the ballet. Laura attended the National Festival de Danse in Montreal, Canada where she performed Melinda Howe’s A Breath of Hayden and received a full Summer study scholarship. After performing as a Company Dancer with the Chattanooga Ballet, Laura joined Ballet 5:8 as a Company Artist in 2013 and was promoted to Solo Artist in 2015. Laura has been featured in many of Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slager’s original ballets, including the leading role of Daniel in Slager’s three-act ballet Belteshazzar: A Perilous Tale and as Prudence for the 2017 world premiere of the ballet/film hybrid Scarlet. As a Solo Artist with Ballet 5:8, Laura had the privilege of performing all over the country and working with choreographer Caleb Mitchell and choreographer/filmmaker Preston Miller. While performing in the company, Laura also served as the Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts Ensemble Director and Studio Manager. Laura is currently an artistic faculty member at Project Ballet in Fort Wayne, IN. She frequently guest teaches and choreographs for many schools throughout the Midwest region.
